Japan Nuclear Crisis: A Worm IN The Works..

As The Worm Slowly Turns...( IMPORTANT UPDATE at the end.)

The ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan keeps getting worse and more worrisome...adding to the whole scale of disaster...
maybe we might have missed something...

Maybe the Stuxnet Worm virus has had some hidden impact in all of this...

this is a quick post with links, so that you can research for yourself, that indeed there could be the means and motivation for this kind of deceptive and subversive disaster..

Japan has a high output of exports and relies on alot of power to opperate their ecconomy and also, the fiasco with Toyota's "faulty" electrics and recalls comes to mind.

Maybe Japan was ripe for sabbotage??? Industrial Sabbotage.

If you see the comments section in my previous post, McJ left a wealth of info in there about the situation of the reactors and maybe a connection to stuxnet.

http://thirteenthmonkey.blogspot.com/2011/03/picking-up-where-they-left-off.html

Here i will post some links and extrapolate a bit, i am NO IT expert or know anything about nuclear energy but i guess now might be the time to get knowledeged UP.

Firsty, i will point out that the Stuxnet Virus attacked SIEMENS operated plants.

The plant at Fukushima is run on Siemens software.

When Stuxnet was released, it went Everywhere, even though it was "allegedly" an attack on Irans Bushhier plant...

see snip from

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/16/world/middleeast/16stuxnet.html?pagewanted=3&_r=3

so what does stuxnet do????

(snip)

The worm itself now appears to have included two major components. One was designed to send Iran’s nuclear centrifuges spinning wildly out of control.

Another seems right out of the movies:

The computer program also secretly recorded what normal operations at the nuclear plant looked like, then played those readings back to plant operators, like a pre-recorded security tape in a bank heist, so that it would appear that everything was operating normally while the centrifuges were actually tearing themselves apart.

(end snip)

and then we see, the worm made the rounds so to speak...

( Snip)

Only months later, in June, Stuxnet began to pop up around the globe.
The Symantec Corporation, a maker of computer security software and services based in Silicon Valley, snared it in a global malware collection system.

The worm hit primarily inside Iran, Symantec reported, but also in time appeared in India, Indonesia and other countries.

 (ed:maybe Japan too hey guys?)

But unlike most malware, it seemed to be doing little harm. It did not slow computer networks or wreak general havoc.

Some experts who have examined the code believe it contains the seeds for yet more versions and assaults. (end snip)

and we now know that Israel and the US have been responsible for this "virus"..

from the same source;

(snip)

"Code analysis makes it clear that Stuxnet is not about sending a message or proving a concept," Mr. Langner later wrote. "It is about destroying its targets with utmost determination in military style."

This was not the work of hackers, he quickly concluded. It had to be the work of someone who knew his way around the specific quirks of the Siemens controllers and had an intimate understanding of exactly how the Iranians had designed their enrichment operations.

In fact, the Americans and the Israelis had a pretty good idea. (end snip)

Please read the WHOLE of that article as it has some awesome info in it.

For More Clarification of Israels involvement with STUXNET please see this article HERE titled

AS THIS IS VERY IMPOTANT it is about the MOX FUEL
at these reactors..

Nuke engineer: Fuel rod fire at Fukushima reactor "would be like Chernobyl on steroids"

UPDATE: as at 13.20 Australian time/ 12.50pm Japan time from BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698

: Japan says it is ready to ask the US military for help in battling the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant, the AFP news agency reports

UPDATE 2: from source

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/aussie-rescuers-exposed-to-japan-radiation-20110316-1bwr4.html

Two members of an Australian search and rescue team in Japan have been exposed to low level radiation during an unexpected landing at Fukushima airport.
The airport is 20 kilometres outside the exclusion zone (end snip)

UPDATE 3: From Asahi.com PLEASE SEE THIS STORY ASAP.

http://www.asahi.com/english/TKY201103150148.html

Extremely serious levels of radiation have escaped.
Dangerously high doses of radiation have been detected in or near the compounds of the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture.
Japan's worsening nuclear crisis will now be compared to the Chernobyl disaster in the former Soviet Union in 1986.

The Fukushima plant has six reactors. Of them, the No. 2 reactor has begun to release radioactive substances as the suppression pool connected to the reactor containment vessel was apparently damaged.

The No. 1 and No. 3 reactors are also in a perilous situation with their nuclear fuel rods exposed out of cooling water.

Now, four nuclear reactors standing in a line are simultaneously spinning out of control.  (end snip)

We must be WISE as SERPENTS...the times they are a changin'

More updates to come. Please all Stay safe.

Hi Saladin, Agreed that it's not surprising ...
But at this stage, just suposition and conjecture.
Who knows what is really happening but we have to suss out why, when there were so many safegurds at the nuclear plants, as we know Japan is Prone to earthquakes, How is it morphing into this highly dangerous situation..looks a bit like problem, reaction and solution manufacturing.
I certianly do not want to create a sense of fear but we must consider the motivations and the Agenda we have seen in past and present disaters..even if it is speculative.
Thanks for your comment :)

Excellent hypothesis A13, completely within the realm of possibility. Great eye for that angle. The earthquake that devastated Haiti with surgical precision, leaving their next-door neighbour the Dominican Republic unscathed demonstrated seismic weaponisation. If China is ever attacked by Western powers i.e. the Triad of Hell (US, UK & Israel), it won't be militarily initially, it will be in the guise of a synthesised catastrophic earthquake in my opinion.

A follow up attack with a Stuxnet worm would instigate a very profound impact on Japan's infrastructure. Not to mention the convenient sacrificial loss of lives as the destruction spreads and the radiation count rises. The previous economic warfare campaign against Toyota is a smoking gun to be sure, and something to definitely factor in as you indicate.

Hi HHQ, Good to see you.
How you been?
Yes it's all very horribly dodgy, i really don't know what to say except my thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese people during these days..the situation is changing and morphing from hour to hour it seems at the moment. I wonder what tomorrow will bring? We are 30mins in time zone ahead of Japan time where i live and i don't think i'll be able to sleep tonight.
Thanks for your comment and for stopping by.
Cheers A13.

Thanks for the links. I was going to try and put up a post myself but you've done a great job of laying out the information. Reactors 4, 5 and 6 were shut down when the earthquake hit which presumably was why the German Nuclear experts from either Siemens or Areva were there, to help with the shutdown of those reactors. Reactor 4 was housing the most recent spent fuel rods (therefore the hottest rods) and this is why we are seeing the fires and explosions at that particular reactor. The water has been boiled off there first therefore dropping the water level and exposing the rods to the air. Exposing the rods to air causes the Zirconium tubes that hold the fuel to oxidize. And it is this oxidization which is pulling the oxygen molecules out of the H2O (the water in the pools surrounding the spent fuel rods) and leaving the hydrogen which is exploding. According the to Steve (the engineer I quoted in my comments on your last post), Zirconium is a very good catalyst for this type of reaction and can pull the oxygen off at around 1500 degrees which is about half the temperature it would normally take to split the hydrogen from the oxygen. Reactors 5 and 6 could also be in trouble soon but it will take longer because their spent rods were not as hot. Reactor four appears to be totally compromised as they have moved everyone out because of the extreme radiation levels and are now trying to shoot water into the pool through the holes in containment building that were caused by the explosion. There is also speculation that the pool may be damaged and leaking but they don't know because they can't go in there to check. If that is the case it sounds like a doomsday scenario to me, unless I am reading this wrong.

Rachel Maddow has done some decent reporting on the mechanics of what is happening at the reactors. Here are a couple of clips that I recommend you watch for a better understanding of what is going on.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#42080592

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#42100927

I am still unclear about why they are unable to keep the water circling in these reactors. Are the power needs so massive for this operation that they just can't supply enough backup power via batteries? Has there been damage to the pumps or have they lost control of the pumps (which could possibly be where a Stuxnet virus might come into play) or were the pumps damaged by the earthquake and tsunami. I haven't heard an explanation of this as yet, although it may be out there.

I understand and wish to continue said...

HI McJ, Thanks for all your imput here, without it i wouldn't have been able to compile this post so, much gratitude. :)
morning here and this is the latest from the IAEA. Via BBC wire.

"2255: The IAEA has released information about the temperature of the water in the spent fuel storage pools inside reactors 4, 5 and 6 at Fukushima Daiichi. Spent fuel that has been removed from a nuclear reactor generates intense heat and the water is usually kept below 25C. The IAEA says that the temperature of the pool at reactor 4 was 84C on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday morning, it was 62.7C at reactor 5 and 60C at reactor 6. Current reports say the pools at both reactors 3 and 4 are boiling. Reactor 4's pool may even be dry."

reactor 4's pool may even be dry...well that's not good is it??
I'm wondering if one reactor goes, will there be a domino effect spreading to the other reactors??

and with the release of Ray Davis, the situ in Bahrain and lybia, and all of it going on at once, what fun to wake up and be confronted by so much. Lots of thoughts and blessings to the people who are suffering through these times.

thanks for your comment and all the info.

Maybe, the stuxnet worm, has infiltrated many reactors around the world and sitting dormant..
speculating now that this is why some countries are shutting down/ stress testing their reactors as they might have a "hidden" threat.
just a thought but plausable, considering the "rush" to test facilities.

JUST Lettingt EVERYONE know that an ISRAELI securtiy firm was doing "security for the past 12 months at FUKUSHIMA..
please see here

http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/israeli-firm-which-secured-japan-nuclear-plant-says-workers-there-putting-their-lives-on-the-line-1.349897

snip;

The CEO of the Israeli company that installed the security system at Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant said Thursday that those workers who have elected to stay behind are "putting their lives on the line" to save Japan.

Magna BSP set up the security system about a year ago at the facility, which suffered extensive damage after the recent earthquake and tsunami, with particular concern over radiation leakage from the reactors at the site

Among the 50 Japanese workers who have remained at Fukushima amid the unfolding crisis, in an effort to bring the facility under control, are two individuals who were in Israel about three weeks ago, where they underwent training to transfer the operation of the security system to the Japanese themselves.

I'll be back with more on this.

Hello, thx fot these informations.

I have one question, where can I verify that the controller system used at Fukushima Dai-Ichi is the Siemens type that Stuxnet targets?

I would really be interested to check information that could prove your point. So far information that can connect Fukushima and Siemes is the only missing link in my attempt to verify this hypothesis.

When you say: "The plant at Fukushima is run on Siemens software." Could you please provide sources backing up your statement?

Hi Pascal, In answer to your comment,

It was a siemens distributed controller system, simatic PCS -7 which was pretty old..and therefore required upgrades, and the plant at Fukushima was not full operational, as it was awaiting maitenence.

http://af.reuters.com/article/energyOilNews/idAFL3E7EF0JY20110315

Siemens were also in partnership with Areva france,

http://www.siemens.com/press/en/pressrelease/?press=/en/pressrelease/2011/corporate_communication/axx20110346.htm

“An independent expert appointed by Siemens AG and Areva S.A. has determined the value of Siemens’ share in the nuclear power joint venture Areva NP S.A.S. at € 1.62 billion. In January 2009, Siemens terminated the shareholders’ agreement for the joint venture and, pursuant to a put option, will sell its 34 percent stake to Areva S.A., the majority shareholder”

Areva did the tech work, ie hardware and siemens the automation, software..ie control system/ Automation system.

Also the link I originally found is not existent anymore:

www.siemens.com/innovation/en/publikationen/pof_fall_2009/infrastruktur/kraftwerke.htm

"In 2008, Siemens was awarded the Asian Power Award for its upgrading of the Sendai nuclear power plant in Japan. Following modernization of the control systems and the three turbines, the output of the plant rose by 40.5 MW to 942 MW." So it was upgraded,
Fukushima was awaiting upgrade at the time of the earthquake, Tsunami:

More on sendai here:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/30/japan-utilities-kyushu-idUSTKG00711920110330

I have since been able to confirm the story about the 10 German Nuclear Experts. It is at the link –
http://www.thelocal.de/national/20110313-33685.html
However this article says that the experts were from Areva (which is a French Company) but there were German experts. ( most likely from Siemens)

Areva and Siemens have worked as a consortium as evidenced by their joint work in Slovakia with Siemens supplying digital supervision, protection and controls systems for two of the reactors.

http://tinyurl.com/5rhur2x

"Erlangen, Germany, 2010-Apr-27
A consortium comprising AREVA and Siemens Energy will supply digital supervision, protection and control (I&C) systems for units 3 & 4 of the Mochovce nuclear power plant in Slovakia. Slovenské Elektrárne a subsidiary of the Enel Group, is completing the construction of two reactors based on VVER (Pressurized Water Cooled and Water Moderated) technology.

The new power plant units will be equipped with TELEPERM XS safety I&C supplied by AREVA and SPPA-T2000 operational I&C from Siemens."

Siemens and Areva have also sent aid to japan,

See here:

http://nuclearstreet.com/nuclear_power_industry_news/b/nuclear_power_news/archive/2011/03/18/areva-and-siemens-send-emergency-equipment-to-japan031802.aspx

In response, Areva chartered a plane to deliver 100 tons of neutron-absorbing boric acid to Japan, as well as 3,000 activated charcoal masks, 10,000 overalls and 20,000 gloves, the French company said in a release

According to a company release, Siemens also is providing 2 million euros in on-site equipment that includes mobile ultrasound devices and water purification systems.

With this generousity, one would also think that they were involved Systems wise.

This is all I can find as some of my links have dropped out or are not available anymore, funny that..
I hope this helps.

HI Pascal, Thank you for your comments, The link of the story from siemens where i saw the link between Fukushima plant and siemens has "dropped" out on the siemens website.
Also, Keep in mind that the virus ( stuxnet) has the capability to morph, and i do believe that it's not just siemens controlled Automated processes that are at risk.
I think it's logical that like a "flu" virus, it can mutate and adapt to certain conditions, therefore most of these automation process controllers, made my Seimens, or not, are still Viable targets..
"Some experts who have examined the code believe it contains the seeds for yet more versions and assaults."

Hi Pascal, That is a great link,
I believe also, that the reason the Merkel Government in Germany has closed it's reactors for invesegation, was the fact that they very concerned about there being a 'dormant" virus in their controllers...maybe this thing is spread across the world, just waiting for the oportunity to go off..
very much appreciated.

Pascal, if you are interested i have another link here for you.

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T101004003493.htm

Stuxnet, a computer virus designed to attack servers isolated from the Internet, such as at power plants, has been confirmed on 63 personal computers in Japan since July, according to major security firm Symantec Corp.

The virus does not cause any damage online, but once it enters an industrial system, it can send a certain program out of control.

Symantec says the virus reaches the servers via USB memory sticks, and warns against the careless use of such devices.

Systems at power plants, gas stations and water facilities are not connected to the Internet to protect them from cyber-attacks.

A Symantec engineer who has analyzed the virus said it was made using advanced technology, and it is highly likely a well-funded organization, not an individual, produced it. The virus has spread throughout the globe via the Internet.

After Stuxnet finds its way onto an ordinary computer via the Internet, it hides there, waiting for a USB memory stick to be connected to the computer, when it transfers itself to the memory stick. When the USB device is then connected to a computer linked to an isolated server, it can enter the system and take control of it.

As computers that harbor Stuxnet do not operate strangely, the virus can be transferred to a memory stick inadvertently.

According to the security company, the virus is designed to target a German-made program often used in systems managing water, gas and oil pipelines. The program is used at public utilities around the world, including in Japan.

The virus could cause such systems to act erratically, and it could take months to restore them to normal.

The 63 infected computers found in Japan were likely infected sometime after June.

According to the company, about 60 percent of the computers that have been infected with the virus were discovered in Iran. Since September, about 30,000 computers there have been found to be infected with the virus. The country's Industry and Mines Ministry has called the virus an electronic act of war.

Some computers at the Iranian Bushehr nuclear power plant, which is scheduled to begin operation in October, have been infected with the virus.

A supervisor at the plant said the virus has not damaged the facility's main computer system and would not affect its planned opening.

In Japan, no public utilities have been affected by the virus. Nevertheless, the Cabinet Office's National Information Security Center has urged electric power companies to exercise extreme care when using USB devices, and to scan any programs that may have been tampered with.

Please rmember that a security firm from israel, called magna bsp, from Dimona ( where israels nulear plant is situtated) have been in charge of security for 1 year..

see my post Here on that

all the best to you.

MORE INFO HERE:

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/03/scada-vulnerabilities/

The security of critical infrastructure is in the spotlight again this week after a researcher released attack code that can exploit several vulnerabilities found in systems used at oil-, gas- and water-management facilities, as well as factories, around the world.

The 34 exploits were published by a researcher on a computer security mailing list on Monday and target seven vulnerabilities in SCADA systems made by Siemens, Iconics, 7-Technologies and DATAC.

Computer security experts who examined the code say the vulnerabilities are not highly dangerous on their own, because they would mostly just allow an attacker to crash a system or siphon sensitive data, and are targeted at operator viewing platforms, not the backend systems that directly control critical processes. But experts caution that the vulnerabilities could still allow an attacker to gain a foothold on a system to find additional security holes that could affect core processes.

SCADA, or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, systems are used in automated factories and in critical infrastructures. They came under increased scrutiny last year after the Stuxnet worm infected more than 100,000 computers in Iran and elsewhere.

Wherever there is trouble, Israel or israelis are present. Surely the answer is change Siemens, get rid of Israel entirely and consider every single Israeli or Israeli dual citizen a Mossad agent hellbent on destroying the world INCLUDING THE USA..
